J MAGGS – art painting
Description
Born in 1819 in Bath, England, James Charles Maggs was widely regarded for his genre paintings, specifically of coaching inns among other themes such as Newmarket races, robbing the mails, the news of Waterloo, and the marketplace at Bath. His father, James Maggs, worked as both an artist and furniture japanner, while his uncle pursued a career as a portrait painter. After spending two years studying in Italy, he came back to Bath and made a name for himself as a painter. His focus gradually shifted towards coaching scenes and became his area of specialisation.
Maggs won considerable credibility, securing important patrons such as Queen Victoria, the Duke of Beaufort, and Joseph Grego. His works are testament to the mastery achieved in technique and skill for naturalistic depiction. The deft treatment of light and shadow instil theatricality in his canvases. Portrait of a Parsee Boy, the present lot, demonstrates his artistic finesse, attention to detail, and achievement in naturalistic rendering. Executed during a later period in his career, the portrait was possibly a commission earned due to his popularity.
